LaBelle!

I have been a Patti LaBelle, but only recently learned that her last name is French for "the beautiful." And that she is, inside and out.

I suppose I first came to love Patti when everyone else did, back in the early 70's, when "Lady Marmalade" was the hit to hear. But while most people lost a decade with her, I was there, letting her inspire and move me in various ways.

I knew I wanted to sing when I heard "Isn't It A Shame." And while everyone was leaving the closet to Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out," I eased on out to "Come What May." My range developed with "Don't Let Go" and I learned breath control with "I Don't Go Shopping," "Little Girls" and "You Are My Friend."

And whether you joined the bandwagon with the Beverly Hills Cop Soundtrack (Stir It Up & New Attitude) or with the R&B chart topper, "If Only You Knew" (She held the number 3 and 5 positions as well with "Love, Need and Want You" and "Love Has Finally Come At Last" a duet with Bobby Womack, you eventually came to appreciate the lady long after I did.

She was there when I started my business(There's Winner In You), when my second husband died(Love Never Dies) and when I dated my third(Let Me Be Your Lady). She took me to church( When You've Been Blessed, One Of These Mornings, Are You Ready For A Miracle), caused me to feel(Can't Help Nobody, Need a Little Faith, Be Yourself) and helped me to rock (Call Me, Time Will and YGMMLSE) lol You will be a real fan if you know that one! The number one artist on the soundtrack of my life, Miss Patti LaBelle.

But she then moved me in other arenas. I watched her live performances on Sisters In the Name of Love, two of the Motown Specials, the funerals of various R&B legends, the Legends Ball, tributes to other artists and her numerous talk show appearances and no one does it like Patti. I've seen her sing without a mic when the sound system sucked and I never missed a word. She is the ultimate diva and I aim to be as phenomenal as she someday, not just as a performer, but as another living soul on the planet!

You see her on Oprah, making macaroni and cheese or smothered chicken. Yes, she can cook, but she is so entertaining! You see her on Ellen or Rachel Ray and you nearly split a gut. And some of my favorite Arsenio Hall moments are of her and him sitting on the couch. Check her out on her old show, "Out All Night" or on the best episodes of "A Different World." You'll see, she is just being Patti! I just love her to death.

I could go on and on about her, but I'm hoping to learn some things about her that I don't already know. So if there are any Patti LaBelle fans out there, let me hear from you!
